This year we look forward to getting things into gear with projects, fundraising and fellowship. The Sunset Optimist Club of Liguanea is filled with hard working talent and as a result of that I expect that this year will definitely prove to be better than the last. We started off on a slow foot in the first quarter but I do hope that in these three remaining quarters that we can achieve many things. I look forward to seeing everyone at our first fund raiser in February. Details will follow soon!

End of Year Updates!
On November 14, 2013 the Sunset Optimist Club of Liguanea inducted a new member, Joan Ellis-Beecher. Joan is a budget analyst by profession but truly enjoys hands-on volunteer work. We are excited to welcome her to the Optimist Family. Welcome Joan!

SOCoL also celebrated Youth Appreciation Week from November 25 - 29, 2013. We took part in a meeting at one of our JOOI clubs, the Fortis Octagon Club of Kingston College on Thursday, November 28, 2013 where we provided refreshments to their club. SOCoL was represented by Director Glaister Green.
Then on Friday, November 29, 2013, members of the Sunset Optimist Club of Liguanea took part in a mass inter-clubbing meeting hosted by the Octagon Club at Wolmer's Boys High School. This showed representation from multiple schools including two of our sponsored JOOI Clubs from Kingston College and the Queen's School. We also invited students from our mentorship partnership at Cumberland High School. At this event Director Marc-Maurice Frankson made a presentation to the students on Leadership. President Tetrice Prendergast was in attendance as well as with Secretary Sharon Passley-Brown and Director Glaister Green. It was a wonderful event.

The President's Message 2013/2014
Greetings Fellow Optimists,
I’m honoured to be elected President of the Sunset Optimist
Club of Liguanea for the 2013/2014 year. This is my third year in this
organization and I must say that it has been a great journey so far. The
Optimist Club is a positive place where its members can bring out the best in
children and I’m grateful to be a part of it. I joined in order to volunteer my
talent and time; to meet new people; and to explore the gift of giving.
In this New Year I hope to do a variety of things. As
President, I want to lead my team to greatness by continuing to put efforts
into our community service projects. I also hope that we can improve our club’s
communication among its members and also with the general public. Strengthening
our membership is key but, to do so, we must first work on improving our
relationships with each other through better communication, improved attitudes
and an overall desire to be more involved in projects.
I expect to receive the full support of my team and the entire
club membership and this will allow me to work to the best of my ability. I
encourage respect among the group of us; hard work is necessary; ideas are
welcomed; and when we plan we must execute. Always keep our goals in mind and
do our best to reach them. This mind set will make this 2013/1014 year a
fulfilling one. As for the projects we intend to embark on, there is always
room for suggestions. However, the Sunset Optimist Club of Liguanea will be
sure to launch its mentorship programme with Cumberland High School
this year. We will also aim to improve our relationship with our two JOOI clubs
at Rousseau Primary and Kingston
College . And, we will
continue the tradition of working alongside children with cancer.
This year we must become agents of change. We must appreciate
the gift of giving. We must showcase our optimism. We must create moments for
all our members to shine. We must focus on our children. This year we will be
“Uncovering Our Children’s Gifts”. I look forward to serving you all as we all
try to uncover our own gifts and the gifts of the children we serve.

Sunset Liguanea shares Optimism with Eve for Life
The morning of Monday May 13 was not just another regular Monday morning for members of the Sunset Optimist Club of Liguanea. It was the first activity in what President Lavern Brown has dubbed, "the packed month of May" and we were gathering at the new premises of EVE for Life, an empowering NGO that supports women and children living with HIV, on Richmond Park Avenue in Kingston, Jamaica. Message from the President
In 1999, a friend invited me to join a
group of persons who would be forming an international club with an emphasis on
helping children. I was interested in learning more about this movement, as I
love children and am interested in their care and protection. Along with a
group of likeminded individuals, we were chartered as the Sunset Optimist Club of Liguanea.
Following the hard work and footprints left
by all the past presidents, it is indeed an honour and privilege to join this
distinguished group and serve as president for the 2012-2013 year.
As a club it is our mission to improve the
lives of the children whom we serve. This has been done through a variety of
community projects which include mentorship, movie nights, Christmas and Easter
treats, health fair, doing improvement work on children’s homes, basic schools,
hospital, and book drives to add books to school library. In order for us to
accomplish our mission, we conduct a variety of fund raising ventures.
It is hard work, but it is rewarding work,
our children are our future and we do invite members, friends and family to
join us in this worthy endeavour. I must say thanks to that friend, our current
secretary, who took me along with her on this journey where it is my privilege
to work with the hardworking members of this club "Making a
difference....one child at a time"
